About Monterey, California

County
Monterey County
Coastal Region
Monterey Bay
Coastal Setting
The southern side of a large bay with both sheltered and exposed coastal sections

Monterey sits on the southern side of Monterey Bay, one of the California coast’s major embayments. The bay’s shape and the Monterey Peninsula create a mix of sheltered water and more exposed outer-coast conditions over a relatively small area.

Seasonal pattern: Water stays cool throughout the year. Spring and early summer often bring strong upwelling and cool water, while winter can deliver larger Pacific swell to more exposed parts of the region.
